What is Estrone?
Estrone, also known as E1 or oestrone, is a steroid like estriol and estradiol, belonging to the class of estrogens. Estrone is one of the major hormones found in the bodies of postmenopausal women. The estrogens are involved in the development of female sex organs and secondary sex characteristics. Before the ovum is fertilized the main action of the estrogens is on the growth and function of the reproductive tract in order to prepare it for the fertilized ovum. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle the Estrone level shows a slight increase.
Applications of Estrone
- as medium supplement for hormone based degranulation studies of natural killer cells.
- as an endocrine disrupting compound for screening bacterial biosensor in toxic water.
- as medium component for monitoring fatty acid synthase (FASN) activity in breast adenocarcinoma cell lines

As an estrogen, Estrone is responsible for female sexual development and function. Because it is less powerful than the other estrogens, Estrone can sometimes serve as a repository for estrogens, and the body can convert it to estrogen when needed.
